Putting the Preamp into the Dock Connector

Hello. To show some progress, here is the status: No PCB (Printed Circuit Board), no SMD (Surface Mounted Devices)!
What we have recently is more a DMD, ie. Device-Mounted-Devices. Just check the image. It is functional! Although the righ side (redundant) legs of the IC were removed, there is still not too much space inside the original dock connector, not to mention that the mic should be also inside, if we want to have a plug with long-enough lifetime. I changed my mind: putting the mics halfway out is just risky. No mobile phones have the sensitive microphone visible! Pls, if anybody is in a mood of designing an smd board, just do it. If not, then I will do some more iterations, until the mic gets into the plug. Cheers!!! Marian

EDIT: You can find some rec. samples online...

3 - Great work! This means that we could have a headphone with a mic like in mobile phones... using the dock connector! (Comment this)

6 - I would make a connector that has audio out, as well as the line in. These would then go to a jack where a headset would plug into.

I do not see it to be to hard... just a little bit bigger. (Comment this)

7 - The line in pins require signal around 1V, whereas the Mic output level is just some milliVolts. This means that connecting a mic directly into the LineIn connector would provide very-very weak signal (roughly 100-200 times weaker). But again, if we add the preamp, then it is no more LinIn, but MicIn, and is not meant to connect any other audio source, but a Mic. Not only because of the really high sensitivity, but also coz it provides the DC voltage for the Mic. (Comment this)

8 - anyone knows if the iphone has also the touch feature to connect an external mic?
or does it misses the 4pin audio connector the touch has got? (Comment this)

9 - Hi there!! Nice job! I design electronics, work with SMDs and do PCBs as well (part hobby, part what I try to do for a living). Your project sounds interesting! Drop me an email. You'll find it in my website (try to avoid spam by placing it). Santiago. www.auspextechnologies.com (Comment this)

10 - I hypothesized this when the iPod Touch first came out! Now someone has to make a Skype app for it and then Wi-Fi calling! (Comment this)
