Headset - Brainstorming session nr.1

Hello!

we get mails everyday asking if a plug for a complete headset solution would be possible. Prabu, Jurgen, and at least 5 other guys keep pinging us about this idea. Well, I thought instead of replying all the mails regarding this topic .. maybe we can have our brainstorming session where the question comes from our (TouchMods) site and the answers and ideas are requested from your side.

What we want at the end is: "a headphone combination with 2.5mm plug..." - because there is also Mic and Speaker pins available..." This is used on a lot of mobile phones and you can buy the mic-headphone combination. The only thing you need is a amplifier and the 2.5mm receptable." MAYBE YES; MAYBE NOT!

What we
already know (almost for sure):
1) There is a little problem: the audio level on the Line-Out pins of the Touch is most probably not SW- adjustable, ie, it would need either the 3.5 mm JAck to be used for the headphones so that we can adjust the volume, or we will need a cable with a mechanical volume control that connects to the forementioned Line-Out pins. Even if it is doable:
2) we know that the LineOut pins are meant to be connected to an Amplifier input (with an imput impedance of (10k-100k)Ohm and not to a tiny speaker that has around (30-100)Ohms and therefore sucks much more current.

That lead us considering to use the 3.5mm Headphone out directly as speaker out, and the dock connector with a preamp as the place to plug in the wires of a headset- mic in case we use a headset.. But then we need a solution for the 2.5mm Mic/speaker Jack reduction for VoIP.. as two 3.5 mm jacks (the classial green and pink  - you know) and an extra Dock Conn would look a little strange...

Ok, here you go, we have the problem, we know what we want at the end, we just need to discuss how to make it. In case you come up with good ideas, you can be sure we will build the prototypes and publish a nice howTo soon.

Cheers, Marian

1 - one solution i can think of and i might have posted it before, is make a complete headset... like use the line in for the speaker and combine the wire extending the mic all the way up near the chest. (Comment this)

2 - Is it possible to use the normal 3.5 jack of the Ipod touch instead of the Audio Out of the dock? I mean the mic (chassis) must be extended in width than use a 3.5 jack plug which can be put on the circuit board and a 4 way 2.5 jack socket and put them together with the mic circuit. (Comment this)

3 - I was also thinking to use the Line-out for ring tones in connection with a small Piezo Speaker. Yea, how would you fit a Piezo speaker? Well, maybe under a Silicon sleve? http://www.gravis.de/Detail.aspx?path=Taschen%2fiPod+Taschen%2c+H%c3%bcllen%2ftouch%2f&pid=170000000000002719 (Comment this)

4 - I think the $25 walmart mic for ipod with line in/out plug is modifiable for the ipod touch. It does have all the parts, but we just need to enable it in sw.
BTW how can I attach a pic or 2 of the innards ? (Comment this)

Chris, pls re-post the link in two lines, in some browser it is impossible to mark the line in one as it is overlapped with the right strip... thnx, mrn (Comment this)

8 - Now if we can easily via software or a small hardware patch use this then everone could go to Walmart to get this.I do think it is a sw issue because the ipod touch does see it enough to say it is an unrecognised device. I will try to do some experiments and signal tracing with an o'scope. BTW who do I get in touch with when (or if) I find something ? I am a retired sw/hw eng.

10 - Whooo Hoooo Some sucess. The line in plug on the adapter is directally connected to the line in l/r pins of the dock conn. I have sucessfully recorded audio (stereo non the less) by a patch cord from my pc line out to the adapter line in plug ! I used vnotes to do it.
